The simple answer of how we get Relics is by the Grace of God. Every Blessing comes from God and being able to rescue these most Holy objects is certainly no exception. Because these are so Holy I did get permission from my Spiritual advisors. Again, because they are so Holy I cannot just selfishly keep them but my advisors said I must share them with the Faithful.
I have been gifted with relics. I have traded relics for relics (this makes me think of baseball cards). These are the best two ways.
Yes, there are places that relics can be bought This is against Church Cannon Law. Most of my documents of authentication have written on them that they cannot be sold. To buy relics is also bad because many are fake because people take advantage of they fact that they are so highly prized by us faithful. The other really bad reason to buy them is because then people think there is a high demand for them, and they keep raising the prices. How can you put a price on such an Holy item?
There are two major ways to tell if a relic is authentic. Both are necessary to declare the relic authentic. The relic will be sealed with a red wax seal and it will have a specific document. Both the seal and document can be reproduced so they also must be authentic. I have seen relics that are fake and seals that are fake and documents that are fake. The forged may not have to be perfect as forged currency but like many antiques there is always some clue to let you know it is bad.
The relics in the collection of Saints Be To God contain several samples from Christ and the Apostles that are about 2000 years old.
However, to consider which is the oldest relic, I will have to start with an introduction to answer this question properly. Two stories need to be known: The finding of the True Cross story and the meaning of the word Golgotha. Golgotha is defined as “The Place of the Skull”. Whose Skull? Adam- yes that Adam- as in Adam and Eve. According to Roman Catholic and Jewish Tradition Golgotha is where Adam is buried. On some Crucifixes there is a skull on the bottom – this represents Adam’s skull. We believe that the second Adam – Christ – was crucified where Adam was buried.
The story of the finding of the Cross has to do with Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, who was tasked to find relics of Christ and to build churches in Jerusalem. St Helena found a temple had been built over the site of Jesus’ death. This temple was believed to be dedicated to Venus. Helena had this temple destroyed and chose a site in this location to be excavated. This led to the discovery of three crosses. To find out which cross was Jesus’ she had brought a woman near death to the crosses. There she had the woman place a hand on all three crosses. Nothing happened when she touched the first two crosses, but when she placed her hand on the third cross she suddenly recovered. Helena declared the third cross to be the True Cross. At this site, Constantine ordered the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to be built. The ancients and Biblical peoples considered the ground of the holy sites to be special and also holy. Similar to the story of the Burning Bush when Moses was standing on Holy ground ( Exodus 3:5 ) and Naaman’s request for taking some dirt from Israel with him ( 2 Kings 5:17 ).
Saints Be To God has a reliquary that contains multiple relics that has in its center “Finding of the True Cross”. No explanation is on the official document authenticating that it is real. It just says, “Finding of the True Cross”. We don’t know what other explanation there could be, but it must be something (probably dirt) from Golgotha. The greater relic would be from Christ – where the Cross was found. But sense this is the same spot where Adam was buried then it would be, although minor compared to Christ, a relic of Adam. And that would be as old as you can get!
