The origin of the Wooden Title is found in the Passion narratives of the four canonical Gospels. Each Evangelist provides detail regarding the inscription, its content, and its languages:

Matthew 27:37: “And over his head they put the charge against him, which read: ‘This is Jesus the King of the Jews.’” (RSV)

Mark 15:26: “And the inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’”

Luke 23:38: “There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.’”

John 19:19-20: “Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, ‘Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.’ Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.”

The Gospel of John is the most detailed, specifying the three languages and the content: “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” (INRI), meaning “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”

Theological and Liturgical Significance

The Catholic Church has long recognized the titulus as more than a historical artifact—it is a theological declaration. The words Pilate ordered, perhaps in mockery, are, paradoxically, a profound confession: Christ is indeed King. This is echoed in the liturgy of Good Friday, where the Passion is read, and the title above the Cross is recalled.

The use of the acronym “INRI” in Catholic art and devotion is ubiquitous. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 554, 559) and Catholic exegesis have seen the title as a prophetic fulfillment and a Christological affirmation.

Artistic Depictions and Iconography

From the earliest Christian art, the titulus has held a prominent place in the depiction of the Crucifixion. In mosaics, frescoes, illuminated manuscripts, and altar pieces, the letters “INRI” are frequently shown at the summit of the Cross.

In Eastern and Western iconography, the titulus is variously rendered in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, reflecting John’s account.

Renaissance artists, such as Giotto and Michelangelo, often included elaborately detailed titles in their paintings and sculptures.

In Catholic churches, the Cross or crucifix almost always bears a small plaque or scroll with “INRI,” symbolically perpetuating Pilate’s inscription.

The Relic of the Titulus Crucis

The Catholic tradition of relic veneration extends to the titulus itself. According to ancient tradition, the original titulus was discovered by Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem in the fourth century. Eusebius of Caesarea and other early Christian writers describe Helena’s discovery of the true Cross, and legends recount that the titulus was found with it.

The Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme

Since at least the medieval period, a relic identified as the titulus crucis has been housed in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Rome. The relic is a small wooden tablet, bearing a faded inscription in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. A 6th-century pilgrim, Antoninus of Piacenza, mentions seeing it in Jerusalem before it was transferred to Rome.

Patristic and Medieval Commentary

Church Fathers and later commentators have interpreted the titulus with spiritual depth:

St. Augustine (In Johannem Tractatus, 116): Augustine remarks on the use of three languages, seeing in them a symbol of the universality of Christ’s kingship and the proclamation of the Gospel to all peoples.

St. Jerome (Epistle 120): Jerome, living near Jerusalem, alludes to the local tradition regarding the titulus and the importance of the trilingual inscription as a testimony to the truth for all nations.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologiae III, q.46, a.11): Aquinas explores the legal and theological significance of the title, noting Pilate’s insistence—“What I have written, I have written”—as a sign of divine providence.

Medieval devotional literature often meditates on the humility and paradox of Christ’s kingship as proclaimed on the Cross.

Doctrinal Perspectives and Devotional Use

The Roman Catholic Church affirms the truth signified by the inscription. Through centuries, the faithful have meditated on the title as a summary of the Gospel message: that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed King, whose salvation extends to all.

The titulus is incorporated into the Stations of the Cross and frequently referenced in Catholic prayers, hymns, and poetry. St. Alphonsus Liguori’s “The Way of the Cross,” for example, draws attention to the words above Jesus as an invitation to acknowledge His sovereignty.

Modern Reflection and Scholarship

Contemporary Catholic scholarship continues to explore the textual, historical, and archaeological dimensions of the titulus. The spiritual value for Catholics, is seen in the title’s a perpetual proclamation: Christ reigns from the Cross.
